A Messsage from Facilities Management and Office of Information Technology

This Saturday, April 2, starting at 10:00 pm until Sunday afternoon 6:00 pm, a number of IT services, including campus email and www.colorado.edu will be unavailable. During the outage the CU-Boulder Network (wired and wireless), as well as VPN, Desire2Learn (D2L), Microsoft Office 365 and Google Apps will remain available; however, campus email sent or received will be queued and then delivered once the maintenance is complete. No emails will be lost. For a detailed list of services impacted, please review the Computing Center Data Center Outage Service Availability spreadsheet.

The services impacted are hosted in our East Campus Computing Center data center. Last weekend Facilities Management, electrical contractors and OIT encountered an unrecoverable issue while working to replace a key electrical component necessary for the data center to seamlessly switch between Xcel Energy utility power and generator power in the event of a power outage. This means that certain IT services are currently at risk of going offline without warning in the event that Xcel Energy’s utility power were to fail. To resolve this issue, and ensure the life safety of those who conduct the work, all power needs to be shut down to the Computing Center data center.

We understand that students, faculty and staff all depend on the university’s IT services remaining available at all times in order to do their work. We are committed to ensuring this outage causes minimal disruption to you and appreciate your support as we work to make certain our IT services are stable.

During the outage

Although www.colorado.edu and associated sites will be down, anyone who visits these sites during the maintenance window will be redirected to an information page, with a list of helpful links and updates regarding this planned outage. Again, during the maintenance any @colorado.edu email sent or received will be queued and then delivered once the maintenance is complete. No emails will be lost.

For questions regarding this outage please contact the IT Service Center at 303-735-4357 (5-HELP) or help@colorado.edu.
